TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The COVID-19 pandemic that struck our nation two years ago has force educators to apply new strategies into the field of education.

For the last two years, online learning has been a new normal way in the field of education. An application called Zoom is one of the applications that educators mostly use to facilitate online classes. This application allows users to meet face-to-face on screen in real time. The first session of a class meeting is mostly an introduction part. Each student requires to do self-introduction.

These problems have been faced by the children from the Children Social Welfare Institution (LKSA) Wisma Karya Bakti, located in Bojong Sari, Depok, West Java. The occupants of LKSA Wisma Karya Bakti are children with age range of junior and senior high school students.

The chief of LKSA Wisma Karya Bakti, Ustad Syirfi stated that, “The children need English learning, especially how to do self-introduction when they join in online classes.” Syirfi also added, “English is a crucial skill that must be mastered by the children of LKSA Wisma Karya Bakti, in order to face the global world and to be a part in industrial 4.0 era.”

Based on the need and the demand from LKSA Wisma Karya Bakti as mentioned above, lecturers from English Department of Bina Sarana Informatika University, Language and Communication Faculty, held a training about how to do online self-introduction.

The lecturers team consists of Maulani Pangestu as the leader, Dwi Indarti and Istihayyu Buansari as the tutors. Several English department students of UBSI also take part in an online training, held on October 23, 2021 via a zoom meeting. Maulani Pangestu said that, “One of the basic communication skills is having a good quality of self-introduction. This skill is important to develop an interaction with other people.”

The tutors presented "7 Simple Steps to Help You to Introduce Yourself Online", adopted from YouTube channel Cel Amade (link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-tHcZZk6ny8&t=2s). Those steps are as follows:

  1. Greet your audience with enthusiasm

The tutors gave examples how to greet in English, such as “Hello”, “Good morning”, “it’s nice to meet you”.

  1. Express your excitement for this opportunity

This step purposes to express the excitement to join the online class. The sentences examples are “I’m very excited about this opportunity”, or “I’m so glad to join this class.”

  1. Share your name to the zoom participants

There are some ways to mention your name, such as,”Hello, my name is …” , “My full name is ….” , “You can call me ….”

  1. State where you’re currently based

The tutors gave examples of English sentences to tell where you live, such as,”Currently, I live in Jakarta”, “Right now, I stay in Bogor”

  1. Share your passions or hobbies

This step is to show other participants about things you like most. The examples of English sentences to share your hobbies are “I like swimming”, “In my free time, I like watching movies”, “My hobbies are playing games, listening to music and travelling”

  1. State what you’re hopping to learn

This step purposes to tell the participants about things you are interested in. For examples, “I want to learn more about English”, “I wish to know how to introduce my self in English”

  1. Close with an open-ended question

The last step aims to end the introduction part with a remarkable line by throwing an open-ended question, such as, “How can I learn English quickly?” “What is the best way to learn English?”

After the tutors presented the material, the participants from LKSA Wisma Karya Bakti were then required to demonstrate how to do self-introduction one by one.
