487.5 million in India communicated with WhatsApp in 2021. This made it more popular than WeChat (Weixin), but what may surprise you is that it’s used more often than Facebook Messenger.

However, that’s because people can use it to talk to people internationally directly to their phone numbers if they want instead of chat with no charge except what takes up limited phone plans. Number of India users is up from 390.1 million users reported in 2020.

2. Brazil

In Brazil, 118.5 million people used this app in 2021, which adds to the 98% of them that have this chatting tool installed on their smartphones. Number of users also increased from the 108.4 million people using WhatsApp to communicate in 2020. Instagram is the second most used app in 2021, and Facebook Messenger is the third most used in Brazil.

3. Indonesia

84.8 million Indonesian people communicated using WhatsApp in 2021, which has increased from the 2021 WhatsApp use total of 68.8 million people.

4. United States

In 2021, 79.6 mobile users spent time on WhatsApp, which is up from 75.1 million in 2020. In the third quarter of 2020, 50% of U.S. consumers used it daily, 78% used it weekly, and 91% used it monthly. It seems to be most popular among the 26-35 age group not only in the U.S. but other countries worldwide.

5. Russia

67 million people in Russia communicated on WhatsApp in 2021, which is up from 64.7 million the previous year. Apparently, Russia turned to using WhatsApp in 2022 after the Meta company that now runs Facebook banned Russian Facebook and Instagram users.

Russian Facebook bans are a controversial and complicated situation that pertains to the Ukraine War that isn’t easy to explain. All you need to know for now is that it has affected Facebook Messenger users even though the FB Messenger system doesn’t have all the same protocol as Facebook itself. This led to an increase of WhatsApp usage for the country.

6. Mexico

60 million people in Mexico used WhatsApp for communication, which is a drop from 62.3 million in 2020. However, the country still remained in the top six countries that uses this messaging system.

7. Germany

49.2 smartphone users had talked with other people using WhatsApp, which is an increase of about a million people since the previous year. 48.3 million people total used WhatsApp in 2020.

8. Italy

In Italy, 36.9 million people who have smartphones, which is about a one million increase from 2020, when about 35.5 million people used WhatsApp to communicate.

9. Spain

Spain experienced a slight drop from 33.00 million in 2020 to 32.2 billion people using WhatsApp in 2021. However, it still holds a top 10 position in a list of countries that use WhatsApp to communicate.

10. Argentina

Argentina held out as the country with the 10th most WhatsApp users in 2021, which totaled 26.5 million. The country didn’t make the top 10 in 2020 but was number six in 2019. However, it’s not uncommon for country usage to fluctuate. For instance, the United Kingdom was at the number 10 spot the previous year.
