How to manage notifications and sounds on Discord

If you’re an avid Discord user, you’ve probably heard the Discord notification sounds countless times. While these notifications can be useful, they can also get annoying. Discord notifies you about everything, from messages in threads to people changing their listening preferences in a call; and if you are a part of many servers, this can become a massive distraction. Today we’re teaching you how to turn off Discord notifications, sounds, and more.

THE SHORT ANSWER

To turn off Discord notifications, go to User Settings > Notifications. Toggle off the slidebar next to Enable Desktop Notifications.

To turn off Discord notification sounds, go to User Settings > Notifications > Disable All Notification Sounds.

If you’re looking to customize Discord notification sounds, the desktop version is the only platform for this feature. Follow these steps to manage your preferences:

  • Open Discord on your computer.
  • Click the gear icon to access User Settings.
  • On the left side bar, select Notifications.
  • Scroll down to the Sounds section. There are 18 sounds that you can manage.
  • Click Disable All Notification Sounds or manually disable the sounds you don’t want.

  • Navigate to the user you want to mute.
  • Right-click on their profile name.
  • From the options menu, select Mute @[their username].
  • Choose the time duration you want to mute the person.

FAQs

When you mute something on Discord, be it another user, a server, or a channel, you will stop getting notifications whenever there is a new message in that thread. You will still receive the messages, but you will not get any notification. However, if someone pings you (mentions you), you will still be notified.

Right-click that server, then click Notification Settings > Nothing. Additionally, you can suppress all role mentions.
